PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Layout Designer will contribute to CARE Timor-Leste’s LAFAEK Magazine using design capacity, developing new and compelling ways to attract and engage supporters.  Overall, the role builds and maintains CARE Timor-Leste’s public profile and raises awareness of CARE’s work in Timor-Leste.  This assists CARE’s supporters and the public to gain a stronger understanding of the key issues facing communities, particularly children and Education.

Key skills for graphic designers-officer: Excellent design and photo-editing software skills; ability to operate and take a good photo. Exceptional creativity and innovation; Excellent time management and organizational skills; Accuracy and attention to detail; An understanding of the latest trends relating to this role within a commercial environment.

In this position, you will work and collaborate with the Content development team, Illustration team, and Communication team. This position is based in Dili, with possible travel required to conduct field activities such as interviews, and field testing.

Attaching previous work samples is an advantage.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

DEVELOP INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE GRAPHIC DESIGNS FOR THE LAFAEK Learning Media (LAFAEK MAGAZINE and LAFAEK ONLINE PLATFORM).

  • Creatively design magazines, posters, banners, and leaflets – with text, illustrations, pictures, and other lay-out elements.
  • Responsible for gathering texts, illustrations, pictures, and other layout elements for the magazine both published and online;
  • Finalize the Lafaek magazine layout and ensure that all-important elements are included and are usable.
  • Finalize all tasks within the deadline prescribed in the production schedule.
  • Design for the sponsorship pages in order to develop a sustainable plan within Lafaek Learning Media.
  • Work with LAFAEK-administration and logistic officers to coordinate project Printing Color. 
  • Seeking out appropriate photographic subjects and opportunities and carrying out research and preparation for a shoot.
  • Working closely with content development, photographer, and communication officer to communicate with photographic subjects, putting them at ease, encouraging them, and directing them.
  • Managing the processing and use of images, discussing technical problems, checking for quality, and dealing with client’s concerns.
  • Developing expertise with software to digitally enhance images by, for example; changing emphasis, cropping pictures, correcting minor faults, or moving objects around.
  • Determine camera placement, compose shots and provide recommendations for the layout graphic proposed.
  • Assist in the Lafaek extension activities, including community dialogues and any other project activities as required.

INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE CONTENT FOR THE LAFAEK ONLINE

  1. Proactively collaborate and liaise with marketing staff, and communication officer,  to review relevant material for sponsorship in order to sustain the project;
  2. Coordinate with communication officer regarding graphic designer details and articles.
  3. Promote and review content on social media (Facebook, YouTube, Website);
  4. Review all-around consistency (style, fonts, images, tone, etc.) and identify customer needs and gaps in our content, also recommend new topics.
  5. Attend and participate in the knowledge-sharing sessions, online production team meetings, and all training sessions.
  6. Rewriting, editing, proofreading, and subbing copy to ensure it is ready for online publication.

PHOTOGRAPHER (LAFAEK MAGAZINE and LAFAEK ONLINE PLATFORM).

  • Working with staff and clients to discuss the images they require and how they want to use them.
  • Seeking out appropriate photographic subjects and opportunities.
  • Carrying out research and preparation for a shoot.
  • Working in different locations and circumstances to get the right image.
  • Using an extensive range of technical equipment including cameras, lenses, lighting, and specialist software.
  • Communicating with photographic subjects, putting them at ease, encouraging them, and directing them.
  • Arranging still life objects, products, scenes, props, and backgrounds.
  • Liaising with other professionals including graphic designers, writers, gallery managers, picture researchers, commissioning editors, and art directors.
  • Managing the processing and use of images, discussing technical problems, checking for quality, and dealing with client concerns.
  • Preparing proofs for approval.
  • Understanding traditional film and digital photography and keeping up to date with industry trends, developments, and new techniques.
  • Developing expertise with software to digitally enhance images – for example; changing emphasis, cropping pictures, correcting minor faults, or moving objects around.
  • Working with Communication officer to; perform tests and clean equipment to secure proper working condition, administer all cameras and prepare various stationery, track-mounted or crane-mounted modes.
  • Implement all quality checks related to effective maintenance of the camera.
  • Determine camera placement, compose shots and provide recommendations.

DEALING WITH CLIENT

  • Liaising with clients to determine their requirements and making technical recommendations.
  • Managing client proposals from typesetting through to design, print, and production.
  • Working with clients, briefing and advising them with regard to design style, format, print production, and timescales.
  • Developing concepts, graphics, and layouts for product illustrations, company logos, and websites.
  • Determining size and arrangement of illustrative material.
  • Preparing rough drafts of material based on an agreed brief.
  • Reviewing final graphic illustration and suggesting improvements if required.
  • Liaising with content development and communication officers on a regular basis to ensure deadlines are met and material is printed to the highest quality.
  • Producing, demonstrating, and receiving feedback about ideas.
  • Keeping clients up-to-date with progress on production progress for each edition.
  • Testing products for errors and making amendments.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To proactively participate in the APPA process for all direct reports (annual appraisal, midyear review, and regular 1:1 meetings) creating an environment where feedback is valued, acted upon, and monitored, and where the APPA process (including the paperwork) is an integral component of Annual Work Plans and activities.
  • Engage in emergency preparedness; assist in any emergency response as required.
  • Promote a safe and secure work environment; foster a culture of safety and security awareness and consistently follow all CARE safety and security policies, procedures and directives; and
  • Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to gender equality, diversity, and child protection.
  • Participate in surveys for the magazines (baseline survey, pre and post-tests, and final evaluation); and cooperate with the Writer team leader, Senior Illustrator, or Publication DPM regarding the use of all relevant magazine items (picture, illustration, design, ideas or hard copy of the magazines)  for interests outside of the project.
  • Design the layout for materials from other projects within CARE; also design the layout in a creative manner within the prescribed deadline.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum University Diploma and/ or Vocational Training in graphic design or equivalent.
  •  Minimum 2-3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in monitoring, evaluation, and learning with an International Non-Government Organization (INGO);
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of design principles, the ability to develop well-conceived, impactful, and innovative designs, and experience in designing long-form publications, brochures, posters and advertising collateral with creative flair.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite design software and in Microsoft Office suite, particularly in Design and Photoshop as well as demonstrated experience in website design.
  • Good oral and written Tetum and English communication skills.
  • Intermediate (very good) Microsoft Office use. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and other database programs is an asset.
  • Initiative, attention to detail, including editing skills and proven high-level organizational skills;
  • Time management skills, including the ability to plan and manage workflows and balance competing priorities to ensure timely processing to meet deadlines in a complex environment.
  • Ability to take direction and to work as part of a team.
  • Proven experience in following standard policies, procedures, and processes.
